The Simpsons Springfield at Universal

At last Universal Studios in Orlando has torn down the walls that have hidden the Springfield expansion! The new area salutes the oversized excess we’ve grown to love from decades of watching the iconic (if oft-inappropriate) animated series. In addition to a new ride, there are eateries serving up enough calorie-laden fare to have us all looking Homer-esque as well as the long-awaited official Duff beer! Here’s what you can expect when you head into Springfield…

Kang and Kodos at Universal Studios Orlando

Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl The spinner ride centers on Kang and Kodos, the green tentacled aliens from Rigel IV that are recurring characters in the annual Halloween Simpson’s Treehouse of Horror episodes. Each ship features a clever name such as “Citizen Kang” and offers a mild thrill for the younger crowd. Once on board an alien vessel, you spin while aiming your ship at targets of familiar Simpson’s characters to help the interstellar duo conquer Springfield.

Lard Lad Donuts at Universal

Fast Food Boulevard Glorious junk food offerings abound in a consolidated diner and kiosks including Krusty Burger, Luigi’s Pizza, Flying Dutchman, Cletus’ Chicken Shack, Lisa’s Teahouse of Horror, Bumblebee Man Taco Truck and Lard Lad Donuts. The donuts alone may be worth the trip – they sell a family sized donut that can be worn as a hat or provide snacks for a family of eight – or just a rotund Dad if you’ve got a Homer of your own in the family.

Moe's Tavern

Duff Brewery and Moe’s Tavern Eat and drink at Duff’s Brewery restaurant or belly up to the bar at Moe’s Tavern and when you’re done, stumble through the Duff Brewery Beer Garden where you can enjoy photo ops with the seven inebriated topiary mascots: Sleazy, Queazy, Edgy, Surly, Tipsy, Remorseful and Dizzy. In addition to beer, Moe’s offers the famous Flaming Moe (in a non-alcoholic version) that features dry ice to create smoke in a sweet orange cola concoction.

Duff Beer The real question for many visitors to Springfield will be “How’s the beer?” Universal called in Executive Chef Steven Jayson (creator of Harry Potter World’s Butterbeer) to develop the craft brew. He came up with three iterations – Duff, Duff Lite and Duff Dry – which all passed muster with Simpsons’ creators Matt Groening and James L. Brooks. Tasters have said Duff resembles pretty pedestrian hops like Budweiser or Yuengling. It makes sense that the beer would be more middle America than crafty (like Springfield itself).

The Springfield expansion is a celebration of everything that’s gloriously wrong with America. When The Simpsons premiered in 1989, we were a nation of thinner people who conducted ourselves with at least a modicum of self-control in our daily lives. 25 years later, we’re chubbier and (thanks to the advent of camera phones and reality TV) are acting out in increasingly less appropriate ways for public consumption. For visitors from other nations, Springfield may be a unique treat. For Americans, though, it may be more of a homecoming!
